The Binance hack
Binance puts the damage at about $6.3 billion, roughly four times the previous record and nearly twice what thieves took from the entire crypto industry in 2025.
The chart ranks gross unauthorized transfers: the amounts initially taken, before any were frozen, recovered or returned, not lasting losses. Values in U.S. dollars at the time of each theft; not adjusted for inflation. Binance: Binance's estimate (reported); TRM Labs puts it at $6.36B, Chainalysis at $6.4B. Bybit: Chainalysis 2025 theft report; Bitget: Chainalysis Bitget analysis. Earlier thefts: the amounts the companies disclosed, converted to dollars at the time where they gave coins or yen: Ronin 173,600 ETH and 25.5M USDC (Sky Mavis); Coincheck 58 billion yen of NEM; Mt. Gox 850,000 BTC; BNB Chain 2 million BNB. FTX: $415M, the bankrupt company's own count of crypto hacked after it filed. Poly Network's attacker returned most of the funds; BNB Chain is a Binance-backed network, not the exchange. 2025 totals: Chainalysis 2026 Crypto Crime Report (the same theft report). Binance's holdings: DefiLlama, $144.9B at 8 p.m. ET Oct. 28, before the hack ($135.2B at the latest reading). Multiples and share are CNBC calculations.
